Tall, short, ripped or bearish; blond, dark or ginger; Mediterranean, American or Eastern European – because everyone is so convinced that Berlin is the new place to be, you always have the choice. It feels like a tidal wave of cocks hits Berlin every day. When you are single and live in Berlin, there is no end to the ways you can fill your day in case you’re not working from 9 to 5 (like most of the people here). Museums, parks, galleries, 5 perfect “third wave” coffee places and infinite number of restaurants. But one of the most amazing things about living in a city like Berlin, is that time of year, when being single is the last thing you worry about. Spring.

Spring. The season of awakening, hormones and inexhaustible possibilities to meet someone – be it your best friend or a cute stranger. Spring is not just the season my hay fever reminds of its existence, but also the season of conferences, workshops and such – events attracting visitors from all over the world. So many tourists, I can take only one at a time.

It all starts with Easter. The week is marked with different bear and fetish events, however none of them is really my cup of party. Sometimes I think I went to the wrong city. Go to Berlin and have the party of your life! Contrary to the custom, I can count the parties I’ve attended on my fingers. Of course networking invitations for Fashion Week and other store and magazine launches, etc. count rather as work than pleasure. In the middle of this spring sextravaganza is Berlin Web Week. It’s that one week when the city is filthy with cute nerdy boys looking for fun.

Unfortunately this past week my schedule wasn’t really devoted to the foreign horny nerds, so I was only looking at the menu on my phone a.k.a. I was checking out the guys on SCRUFF. Maybe come weekend I will have the chance to entertain some of those visitors. At the end of the day, I love Berlin and think it’s part of my commitment, to give tourists the best time possible.

Eventually, that’s why so many people have come and stayed in Berlin. Just like my friend Nathaniel, who flew in Tegel on a research grand and enjoyed his hookup with a former Mr. Gay Germany so much that he did everything possible to win one more year of scholarship. Now, I am not a big body fanatic, but for Nathanael, the perfect guy must also have the perfect body. That’s why he works out almost every day of the week and keeps trying to inspire me to do the same. “He had the most perfect body I have ever seen in my life” – was Nathaniel’s description of the night over coffee at KAFFEEMITTE. And yet, I am still asking myself, if body image was so important, why am I not having any problem finding a hookup? Are my standards so low or do I make up in wit what I lack in appearance? At least that’s what I like to think. Nonetheless, Nathaniel was bottoming for Mr. Gay Germany and nobody could top that.

Meanwhile, I was getting over an ugly breakup with a guy whom I desperately tried to fall in love with, but failed. Let me break this relationship down for you: pure passion and a couple of butterflies in the beginning, bad sex in the middle and numerous impatient attempts on his side to top me, followed by me ignoring him and ending it one day after Valentine’s day. Two days later I heard he fucked a guy at a sex party at KITKATCLUB on the day before I arrived back from holidays in Bulgaria. His “most reasonable” explanation for his actions appeared to be: “My relationship and my sexual life are two separate things to me.” That’s when I realized that I have been looking or asking for the wrong thing all along. I was so focused on finding a relationship, that love and caring and respect somehow slipped off my priority list. And still, I couldn’t help but wonder, if it was my wish and lust for relationship that attracted this guy, does it mean that I will be able to have relationships only with some freaks? I hope not.

However, this was before spring. Before the hormones, before the sweat and before the long nights, the warm air and humid stickiness. Time will tell, if I will enjoy those with anyone or a special someone. That was an unfortunate choice of words.

Face it, you’re in London. There are far worse places to be in the world, such as Paris, where the bill for a distinctly average coffee will have you shouting out oh la la or where you’ll be in constant fear of being mugged.
Shave

Use your time of sadness and self-indulgence to shave whichever body parts you see fit. Look good and feel swell with a £7 haircut on the Tottenham Court Road or shave from home in the comfort of your own bathroom.
The best part of working on a print product?

B: It’s nice to work on something that will exist only in real life, in someone’s personal space. It’s tangible. The idea is old as shit…you get to hold it, you get to feel it, and it becomes a visceral experience that you can’t really get through the internet. Unless you’ve found yourself in a Grace Jones YouTube K-Hole… that’s kinda visceral.

J: Print is forever. OK if not forever, at least you keep it around longer then a blog post you’d never go back to. I totally enjoy collecting independently published things. There’s a certain love that goes into them. Pulling a zine I’ve had for years off the shelf and revisiting it feels almost as good as getting it in the mail and pouring over it for the first time.

What makes JIMMY distinguishable from other queer zines?

J: JIMMY is about Los Angeles. It doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s equal part sexy and sweet. B: I think we try to make JIMMY a little more adorable than other queer zines. We get the raunch factor in there, sure, but we also try to focus on day-to-day lives of queer men in the community we live in… We want to showcase the work of men that you want to husband.

Do homos actually need another queer zine?

B: Yes Yes Yes! If not for anything more than satisfying some weird obsessive compulsion so many homos have to meticulously collect the weirdest shit.

J: YES. We homos are always sifting through media for any golden gay nuggets we can find. For me, coming across a new queer zine is like hitting the jackpot.

What defines masculinity for you?

B: A hairy chest

J: Like any good performance it comes with its own props. Mostly body hair and bravado. I’m seriously turned on by masculinity, but don’t underestimate how sexy a beautiful, nelly boy can be.

Would you buy or mock a gay wedding magazine?

J: To each his own, but I’d probably mock. My parents are happily still together, but I think, for the most part, getting straight married is dysfunctional. Why would would the gays wanna do that to ourselves. I’m all for having the right to marry, but I don’t need a magazine selling me petit fours and matching white tuxedos.

B: I don’t know if I would mock a gay wedding magazine (I hate all the print work that goes into Wedding things), but I would for sure buy one. Are you kidding? I’ve been trying to be married since I was 14. Shit, maybe I don’t need the magazine, I already have it all picked out (including denim kimonos please and thank you)

What newspapers or magazines are you subscribed to?

J: New York Times and Radical Faerie Digest B: I get Monocle monthly, Fantastic Man and McSweeney’s quarterly.

What are three things printed matter can’t live without?

B: I have a collection of all my boarding passes I keep really close to me, old 30′s books for design inspiration, and Darrin Klein’s Box of Books.

J: I agree with Brent, my passport is definitely one. You’d think in our digital world they’d be relics by now, but it’s still so satisfying to get a stamp in that printed book. I also love my collection of “The Male Figure” physique magazines from the 1950s. And every time AA Bronson personally gives me one of his zines I feel like the luckiest boy in the world.

What project have you planned in the near future?

B: Issue 5′s up next and then it’s on to some other one-offs that we have up our sleeve… small quantities, super special, etc.

J: Yeah we’re working on Issue No. 5 and a couple other limited edition print projects. Oh and we might be silk screening speedos for this pool party called Summertramp so keep your eye out for a banana hammock with our name on it.

However, William Miller wasn’t driven by any of those while creating his collection of Ruined Polaroids. It was all due to circumstances, chance and maybe even luck. Enough ranting, I think he put it best in his own words: “These are Polaroid pictures run through a partially broken SX-70 camera that I purchased from a yard sale. The camera sometimes spills out 2 pictures at a time and the film often gets stuck in the gears, exposing and mangling the images in unpredictable ways. Over time I’ve figured out how to control and accentuate aspects of the camera’s flaws but the images themselves are always a surprise. Each one is determined by the idiosyncrasies of the film and the camera.”

Friday night saw my first ever visit to the Guggenheim Museum in NYC. The head honcho museum that spans worldwide in Venice, Bilbao, Berlin, and Abu Dhabi. Showing was a retrospective of recently deceased sculptor John Chamberlin that I was able to privately view that night. The rotunda featured his many sculptures consisting of recycled car parts. The main event for me however were two of my favorite contemporary drone artists Julianna Barwick and Grouper (solo project of Portland, OR musician Liz Harris) playing their material as a collaboration with the current exhibition. Julianna was quiet banter wise and somewhat aloof of the audience in front of her. That didn’t, however, stop her from delivering a truly angelic set with her beautifully looped samples of her church choir voice layered on top of simplistic beats. She had a fitting video of overlaid shots of forrest being projected behind her giving an ideal representation of the location she wants her music to bring you. I could pick out songs from her recent album “The Magic Place” with songs such as “Prizewinning” and others.
Next up was Grouper who played her newly finished project Violet Replacement which consisted of multiple tape recordings of field sounds lead into a large mixer with tons of reverb. She sat quietly on the stage for the entirety of the set, and the crowd followed suit. The product of these tapes was insanely unearthly sounding and dark and had me with my head behind my legs with my eyes clothes for the majority of the time.

I love natural acoustics and the rotunda’s atrium allowed for the sound to travel and naturally reverberate against the walls of the museum. I was a little disappointed that the museum had closed off the rotunda during the set, as no one was allowed to leave the bottom floor once the music started. Sitting to drone music is hard and it can make you sleepy (especially after those drinks at the Library on Ave A and generally walking all over Chinatown that day), and I really wished we were allowed to experience the current exhibition while taking in the music. Drone is such an inactive listening experience that it truly is heard better when you’re putting your mind towards something else like studying. Anyways, take a look at more of the breath taking photos as brought to you by BrooklynVegan‘s Amanda Hatfield

It makes me really happy that a NYC gallery would take such a prolific yet seemingly unknown local art center and put their work on display. I was so happy to see that Julio would have things on display so I ran on downtown to SoHo to check it out. Julio’s work along with a few others represented the underlying but still very vibrant queer culture that exists within Mexico.

Check out more from the show’s pamphlet and if you’re in NYC go check it out! It’s open until May 27th.

Last night I watched an excellent lecture (twice! first watched, then went to bed last night listening just to the audio) by London artist James Bridle. The, title as he explains, does have a reference to Rhianna, even though he messed up the wording a little bit. Here he talks about fascinating ideas of coded spaces, bot intimacy, gay cyber cruising, and the German made up word: Straßeblickfernweh or “street view wanderlust”. He also explains his “ship a drift” project. I was completely entranced by this lecture and I highly recommend it. This guy has easily made my “artists to keep a watch on” list. He also has a Tumblr, which I had no idea I had been following for almost a couple of months now!

I personally know 3 women who would immediately strip to pose for Pascal Möhlmann. But that’s not the point. Although you might think otherwise, Möhlmann doesn’t see his work as erotic and based on fetishes. He doesn’t see a narrative in there either. Pascal ended up living in Zürich after he met his now wife at a party in Basel some years ago. And just because the town was so small and provincial the couple decided to move to the city (as much as this could be said about Zürich) His Gallery of Idiots catalogue includes the first 27 of all idiots in an ongoing speed painting project with the same name. However I’ve selected some of his earlier works that also capture the real essence of Möhlmann’s work, which focuses on egoism, selfless worship and male domination.
