Berlin’s Expatriarch is expanding with a new event series entitled «Mort à la Différence», launching Saturday, July 23rd at Chez Jacki, featuring Brooklyn’s Light Asylum and other live acts and DJs. Like with the Expatriarch website and radio show, Joey Hansom will curate international talent who defy gender paradigms, marked by a transgenre musical approach.

Synth-wave duo Light Asylum have built up a solid following in their native Gotham City based on constant gigging and online coverage, and now the rest of the world is finally catching on, thanks to a new 12” release of their In Tension EP via label Mexican Summer (home of Washed Out and Best Coast, among others), plus their single “Shallow Tears” with remixes by SALEM and Teengirl Fantasy.

“Light Asylum is a metaphor for the lack of genuine self-expression in the world, where people suppress their sexuality, their creativity, their entire lives. This music is for them and for people to realize that they’re not alone. The music is dark, but it’s at a place where you can see there is light at the end of the tunnel,” explains founder Shannon Funchess, whose booming voice (think Joy Division’s Ian Curtis and Yazoo’s Alison Moyet) has also been heard on recordings by !!!, TV on the Radio and Telepathe.

Local Australian/Irish duo Kool Thing have developed an undertow of interest throughout Europe in just six months since self-releasing their debut EP, rocking the crowd while gazing at their shoes, sharing the stage with dyke-minded acts such as MEN and Austra, including June’s sold-out show at Berghain.

Newcomer Berliner act G-DMOTHER promise “pro-life pop” dealing with “politics, sex and religion”, arranged for voice, electric cello and backing track.

Rounding out the lineup will be DJ sets from Joey Hansom, bringing his usual vinyl-only blend of underground mainstream obscure hits, Nikolaj Tange Lange (of Nuclear Family infame) with nocturnal emissions of indie rock and electro, and Jemek Jemowit, splattering Alte Deutsche Welle onto the dancefloor. Additionally, the terrace along the Spree river will be open the whole night for suckers who care about fresh air.
