Diana Scherer has a methodical approach to her work, comparable with scientific precision and childish curiosity that makes looking at her photographs both an aesthetic and learning experience. Scherer, born in Lauingen/Germany, studied fine art and photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Since 2003 she lives and works in Amsterdam.

With Nurture Studies, Diana Scherer presents an archive of flowers she has grown from seed over a six-month period (media used is seeds, soil and photography). Rather than letting the flowers grow in open soil, she has forced each plant to develop within the confines of a vase. Only at the end of the process does she remove the plant’s corset, exposing roots that retain their shape as an evocation of the now absent vase.
