How do I feel about varieté programs? I’m always suspicious. They can vary (haha) from very entertaining and sexy to pretty uncomfortable and dull. Thus, I’m going to give variety show one more chance this Saturday at Berlin’s .HBC where our friends from Expatriarch put together Varieté Varieté. The show will treat the audience to cyborg folk, a performance on a singing saw, Australian chamber punk (playing on a saw) renditions of ghost stories, experimental electric cello, old-timey gramophone tunes, and an exhibition illustrating the burgeoning drag scenes in Poland, Ukraine and Belarus.

Cyborg folk singer Islaja (Fonal Records) will share the stage with fellow Finn Mimosa Pale on the singing saw for an exclusive collaborative performance laced with textured aural hypnotics, but venturing beyond their typical bounds of music.

DJ Joey Hansom will present old-timey tunes on the gramophones in between the live acts. Anita Drink is the evening’s MC and hostess, presenting, performing and provoking audience participation with the graceful belligerence she is known for.

In addition, a number of international visual artists will display their work for the exhibition Eastern Europe in Drag, examining dress codes and gender codes in the political contexts of Poland, Ukraine and Belarus.
